A huge surprise to find a meteorite weighing 7.6 kg for the first time from Antarctica!!!
An international team of scientists has found a special type of meteorite from the coldest continent on Earth, Antarctica. A meteorite weighing 7.6 kg (according to expert astronomers, a meteorite with such a heavy weight can be considered as a rock) was found at the depth of the huge ice river in the Blue Ice region of Antarctica. This blue ice area is a part of the Belgian Princess Elisabeth Antarctica (PEA) station in Antarctica.
The international team includes scientists from Switzerland, America, Belgium and the International Polar Guide Association.
The team of scientists said with great hope and joy that such a heavy meteorite has rarely been found before. We aim to do an exploratory study of elements in this meteorite to find useful information like how the Earth has formed 4.50 billion years ago, how the Earth is structured and from which elements! We will take a piece of it and do a deep study of the original mineral elements in it to determine what kind of meteorite it is!
At the present stage, we will send it to the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences in Brussels, the capital of Belgium, by placing it in a special type of box with a cold environment.
Professor Maria Schoenbachler of the Department of Earth Sciences in Zurich, Switzerland excitedly reported that the Blue Ice Zone had become the Earth’s repository for meteorites from deep space. Earlier, a team of scientists found 600 small and large meteorites from the same area. This time we have used the Global Positioning System (GPS) and images from satellites of different space research institutes of the world to do research work in the same area from 11th December 2022 to 11th of January.
The team of scientists presented a critical point and said that such a heavy space rock came from the region between Mars and Jupiter in our solar system (known as the asteroid belt in the language of astronomy).
Ajay Dharre, a former senior scientist at the Indian Institute of Geomagnetism (IIG) and who has visited India’s Antarctica research station Bharti 11 times for research, told the Gujarat Samachar giving information that a meteorite weighing 7.6 kg is probably found for the first time from Antarctica. Previously, many meteorites weighing less than 200, 250, and 400 milligrams have been found and we have also studied them in depth.
The team of scientists will now research this meteorite to get information about the formation and structure of the Earth…
However, now that a 7.6 kg meteorite has penetrated the Earth’s atmosphere, it means that it must have fallen many years ago. Also, the massive impact and extremely intense speed must have plunged deep beneath the vast ice sheet of Antarctica. Such meteorites usually contain rare natural elements like iron, magnesium, silicate etc. Yes, the team of scientists hope that the information they will get about the formation of the Earth and its structure through the research of this large rock will be essential and useful.
